Camp Shelby camp shelby
The Red Cross’ Service to the Armed Forces program is growing rapidly at Camp Shelby!  We now have many opportunities for volunteers to serve our U. S. Armed Forces, on post and off. We have an office in the Family Assistance Center that helps soldiers in times of need through the Red Cross casework process. We also have a new program at the Medical Task Force Health Clinic in which volunteers assist in the deployment medical clearance of service members. Both of these programs allow hands-on, in-depth experience working with the military that has never been offered at this chapter. We are excited to offer this opportunity for new and current volunteers!

Red Cross Camp Shelby Family Assistance OfficeCamp Shelby
Volunteers at Camp Shelby offer a variety of services to the military and their families. They send verified communications on behalf of family members who are facing emergencies or other important events to members of the U.S. Armed Forces serving all over the world. Messages are delivered around-the-clock, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, often in person by a Red Cross staff member overseas. The local office and volunteers are on the front lines of this communication.  From working with a family during a time of loss, to notifying an expecting service member of the newest addition to his/her family, volunteers are an integral link to keeping military families connected. Caseworkers at the Family Assistance office also assist soldiers stationed at Camp Shelby and local military families with applying for emergency financial assistance during hardships associated with being on active duty.

Camp Shelby Medical Task Force Office
The Medical Clinic is the newest addition to our Service to the Armed Forces Program. This volunteer program assists service members through the deployment medical screening and clearance process. The Red Cross is there to provide a hug, handshake, cup of coffee, and any other support as they go through this process. They work hand-in-hand with the Medical Task Force Command making sure that soldiers are being taken care of. This office entails not only “Hospitality Volunteers” but can include anyone in the medical field—doctors, nurses, LPN’s, EMT’s, etc.-- a chance to give back as well.

Volunteer Job Descriptions

Family Assistance Center Office

  • SAF Emergency Communications Volunteer Caseworker
    • Initiates and transmits verified communications according to Red Cross guidelines that allow service members to stay informed about emergency situations at home. These caseworkers work with medical facilities, funeral homes, police, fire, and other agencies in the community to provide reliable information to military command about the situation at home.
  • SAF Financial Assistance Volunteer Caseworker
    • Processes the application for Army Emergency Relief loans and VFW grants (for Veterans). These caseworkers verify emergency financial situations so that family members have access to immediate financial assistance during times of hardships. When the family’s only car breaks down or there is an unexpected medical expense, the Red Cross is there to walk them through the grant or loan process so their immediate, emergency needs can be met. While a service member is deployed, they know they can rely on the Red Cross to take care of their family if they need it.
  • “Get to Know Us Before You Need Us” Volunteer Presenter
    • These volunteers brief deploying soldiers of the assistance and support the Red Cross offers to military families. These presentations explain what is needed to send an Emergency Communication as well as what information families need to be given when a service member is deployed so that if there is an emergency, a family can be well prepared.
    • GTKUBYNU Presenters also visit with Family Readiness Groups (FRG) to work one-on-one with families to ensure they know about Red Cross services as well.
  • SAF Public Relations Volunteer
    • These volunteers are tasked with several agendas—
      • They work with the military community to make sure that the Red Cross’ services are being publicized within networking groups such as FRG’s and on base. Their tasks could be ensuring that posters and brochures are passed out, contacting the media about Red Cross events coming up, making sure that the Red Cross is represented in the Camp Shelby Reveille newspaper. Specialty training is a requirement for this job.
      • PR volunteers are also tasked with creating a public resource guide. The SAF grant that the chapter has been awarded allows the printing of a guide for military families of all resources in the community. The PR volunteers are tasked with making sure that all the information that is available is included in the resource guide.
      • PR volunteers work with other agencies to make sure that any event that is happening in the community or services being offered from other agencies are known to the Red Cross and military families.
  • SAF Volunteer Events Coordinator
    • This volunteer coordinates any and all SAF activity.  Events Coordinator does not necessarily have to work out of the Camp Shelby office, but does have to be able to communicate with Camp Shelby Command and the SAF Coordinators and well as the Chapter Emergency Services Staff about events being held in the community. The Red Cross will host at least one event this fiscal year and this person will be the contact.  Last year’s Military Family Appreciation Day at Hattiesburg Zoo was huge success and we hope to host another great event with the help of the Events Coordinator.

  • Clerical Volunteers
    • These volunteers help the medical clinic staff do office clerical duties. The medical clinic is often understaffed and is always looking for a helping hand to process the thousands of soldiers that come through their doors each year.

  • Medical Volunteers—
    • Camp Shelby VolunteerCalling all Doctors, Nurses, LPN’s, EMT’s! The medical staff needs you!
