— For more than 89 years, the Pine Belt Mississippi Chapter of the American Red Cross has been a hero for thousands of people in our community, lending aid during times of disaster, seeing to the welfare of military families and providing citizens with lifesaving CPR and first aid skills. Now many members of our community are stepping forward to be “Heroes” for the American Red Cross, each pledging to raise $1,000 to keep the vital services of the Red Cross alive and well in Smith, Jasper, Jones and Wayne counties.
The public is invited as the organization continues the 2009 “Heroes for the American Red Cross” campaign with the local Citizens National Bank branches to introduce and honor this year’s “Heroes.” Volunteer and Board of Directors will be at both the Waynesboro and Laurel offices of Citizens National Bank Friday from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. to promote the Pine Belt Chapter Heroes Campaign and give live testimonials of their services with the American Red Cross.
“Heroes for the American Red Cross’ is a grassroots campaign in which local business people, school groups, church groups, civic clubs and individuals pledge to raise $1,000, through any legal means they choose, for the local Red Cross chapter,” said Peggy Owens-Mansfield, executive director for the Pine Belt Chapter. “This year, Citizens National Bank will accept donations at both the Laurel and Waynesboro branches during the campaign. The funds will be used to support Red Cross services, such as disaster relief, assistance for fire victims, emergency military communications, first aid and CPR training and disaster preparedness information for our community. All money raised will support your neighbors in Smith, Jasper, Jones, and Wayne counties.”
“We are delighted to support the Heroes Campaign by taking donations at our local branches and hosting live radio remotes to promote the American Red Cross,” said Susan Wood, bank manager for the Laurel Branch.
Heroes for the American Red Cross” is a one month campaign. The Heroes often come up with fun and unique fundraisers, so be on the lookout for them throughout the month of March – when the campaign officially kicks-off. Please support the Heroes when you see them in the community.
