— The good news is the 2008 United Way of the Pine Belt Region’s goal of $605,000 was shattered. Announced during the annual meeting Thursday, United Way staff and volunteers were thrilled that $617,207.96 were pledged by area donors, despite economic conditions. However, to maintain current levels of funding for United Way agencies during 2009, there will be about a $57,000 shortfall based on current projections. But, even with the shortfall, volunteer leaders told agencies and other volunteers Thursday that it’s not quite time to panic. That money will come from reserves that have been banked over the past several years, and there will still be some money in the bank.
With $471,765 going to 25 agencies in Covington, Jasper, Jones, Smith, and Wayne counties during the 2008 fiscal year, United Way of the Pine Belt Region Executive Director Barbara Johnson said more than 240,000 services were provided.
Outgoing president John Chioco, expressing gratitude to donors and volunteers, said he realizes how difficult 2008 was for business owners, families, and other area people.
“The year 2008 has been a little bit rocky,” Chioco said. “The impact on our economy has been tough. We don’t know what will happen.”
Rex Gilbert, who is the incoming president, said no president or campaign chair wants to be the first person failing to reach the goal. Pointing out next year’s theme of “Hope for a brighter tomorrow,” Gilbert said the leadership is committed to working hard in achieving goals to keep the local United Way working well.
“We do have some challenges this year, and we all know it,” Gilbert said. “But, sometimes all they have is hope. We’re going to face some challenges we never have.”
Johnson, who has led several successful campaigns over the past years, said she still has a positive attitude when it comes to the 2009 campaign.
“If you approach things from the negative, you’re going to get a negative result,” Johnson said.
Also pointing out that member agencies are helping to raise money for the United Way, Johnson used the American Red Cross youth as an example.
“Their youth worked at the fair and sold lemonade and tea, and gave half that money to the United Way,” Johnson said.
