Laurel cancer survivor inspires others

Aug 17, 2009

LAUREL, MS. (WDAM) - After a tough year of battling breast cancer, Peggy Owens-Mansfield is back to her familiar routine of working hard at the Pine Belt Chapter of the American Red Cross. She has been a part of the chapter for twenty four years.

"I feel very good now. I think the big fear for me certainly was just hearing the cancer word and I was so lucky because the doctors were so kind to get me in immediatly to be seen," said Owens-Mansfield.

She says one of the most humbling experiences for her was the outpouring of support and well wishes she received from the community during her cancer battle.

"I mean family support, extended family support, Red Cross family support, church family support and just people who were clients," said Owens-Mansfield. "Over three hundred get well cards - just amazing to me that people had the time to think about the fact that I was facing this."

And one of her close confidents and advisors during her illness was Lagena Everett. Owens-Mansfield knew Everett as a child, and she grew up to become an oncology nurse. Lagena Everett is also married to the disaster services coordinator at the Pine Belt Red Cross, Matt Everett.

"We knew we would get through it, we just you know were praying that things would be easier but everybody's treatment is different," said Lagena Everett. "Everybody's road is different, there are different hills for everybody. But we are just glad that she is where she is today and has recovered as well as she has."

Peggy Owens-Mansfield says people currently fighting cancer should always keep hope alive and accept help from those who care.
