— The United Way of the Pine Belt Region has kicked off it’s 2009 fundraising campaign with about 48 percent of the goal already met.
Thanks to contributions from United Way’s 15 “Pacesetter companies,” the agency has raised about $294,000 towards its goal of $610,000.
“Our Pacesetter companies agreed to have their campaigns in early August, prior to the regular campaign kickoff in September,” explained United way Executive Director Barbara Johnson. “They basically set the pace for the whole campaign.”
The official campaign kick-off was held Friday with Pacesetters gathering for the annual kick-off breakfast.
“We are off to a good start, but have a long way to go to reach our goal,” said Johnson. “We’re looking forward to a successful campaign.”
The 2009 United Way campaign total will be announced at the annual meeting held in February.
Money raised during the campaign will be allocated to various service agencies in the Pine Belt region. Among agencies receiving United Way funds are the American Red Cross, Salvation Army, Association for the Rights of Citizens with Developmental Disabilities, Retired Senior Volunteer Program, Parents for Drug Free Youth, Good Shepherd Clinic, Domestic Abuse Family Shelter, Boys Scouts and Girl Scouts. These and other United Way agencies assist with nurturing children and youth, promoting health and healing, strengthening families, and encouraging lifelong independence and self-sufficiency.
