Haiti relief drive Wednesday

WDAM-TV and the Pine Belt Chapter of the American Red Cross will co-sponsor a fundraising drive for Haiti relief efforts from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday at Sawmill Square Mall, 910 Sawmill Road.
Colleen Donovan, a co-anchor on News Seven’s Live at Five newscast, said the station thought it appropriate to allow the community to assist in the country.
“People in this area after living through Hurricane Katrina really sympathize in a big way with anybody going through natural disasters,” she said. “The pictures from Haiti are just heartbreaking. This is a great way for people to do something to help out.”
Donovan said WDAM plans to make announcements regarding the drive throughout the day Wednesday, as well as live shots during its newscast.
“We encourage the folks to come on out, support the cause and support the Red Cross,” she said.
Peggy Owens-Mansfield, executive director of the local Red Cross chapter, noted that she and other volunteers would be on hand throughout the day.
“All of the proceeds will go to the Haiti relief,” she said. “The Red Cross originally planned to contribute $1 million. Of course, it’s gone well beyond that now. This money will help with relief and the development to follow.
“With the kind of money being donated, we will be able to do some things to help develop the country once the crisis part is gone,” Owens-Mansfield added. “From my understand, Port-au-Prince (the capital of Haiti) is just devastated.”
