Three fires make busy morning for Jones Co. firefighters

Mar 19, 2010

was a busy morning for Jones County volunteer firefighters Saturday as a they responded to two residential fires that occurred within minutes of each other and an early morning electrical wiring fire.
Jones County fire units were dispatched to a mobile home fire at 464 Magnolia Road at 9:28 a.m. and to a house fire at 139 Hines Road at 9:53 a.m.
Firefighters were dispatched to a residence at 31 Morning Road at about 7 a.m. to discover electrical wires burning. There was no significant damage.
“The mobile home was engulfed in flames when we made our arrival,” said Lance Chancellor, public information officer for the Jones County Fire Council. “There were no occupants in the structure at the time of the blaze.
“We were told that there were two dogs in the structure, one of them was recovered and taken to Hattiesburg for treatment,” he said.
Cara Wilkerson and her husband, Jimmy, lived in the mobile home with their three children. She said she had just left her home to visit her mother who lived nearby.
“We hadn’t been gone no more than 5 or 10 minutes when we got the call that our house was on fire,” said Wilkerson. “I thought it was just a joke because we had been gone for only a few minutes.”
Wilkerson said the family’s Mastiff bulldog, Tiny, was rescued from the fire and looks as if it will survive. Harley, their Chihuahua, did not survive and was recovered from the mobile home after the fire was extinguished.
“We’re thankful no one was at home when it occurred,” said family friend, Dennis Duke. “It could have been worse.”
Wilkerson said she is thankful the blaze didn’t happen in the middle of the night while they were asleep.
“I don’t know how the fire started,” she said. “The only thing I can think of is the electric heater and it was supposed to be off. We always cut it off when we leave.”
Chancellor later said the cause of the blaze was determined to be smoking materials, perhaps cigarettes.
Fire units responding to the Magnolia Road blaze were Sandersville, Powers, Glade and Rustin. Other responders were the Jones County Sheriff’s Department, Jones County Fire Coordinator Dan McKenna and the American Red Cross.
Fire units responding to the Hines Road fire were Calhoun, Pleasant Ridge, Soso and Hebron. There was minor damage to the residence.
